961st Post - Joe Besser

First of all, I hope you all enjoyed the Bob Powers interview I posted yesterday. I am transcribing another one now, and a second one is with the subject for him to read over.

I will write for a moment tonight about Joe Besser, the 5th guy to be a member of the Three Stooges. Everyone who knows the Stooges names them as Larry, Moe, and Curly. Curly retired from the troupe in 1947, and was replaced by Moe and Curly's brother Shemp (who was actually a Stooge before Curly was originally!) Shemp died in 1955, and Joe Besser joined for 2 years, leaving in late 1957 when the Columbia short films department was shut down. The Three Stooges movies of the 1960's had Joe Derita as the third Stooge. He was nicknamed Curly Joe because he looked so much like Curly and to differentiate him from the first Joe Stooge. It's complicated. Don't get me started on Emil Sitka!!

Mark Evanier has unearthed this video. Besser was from St. Louis. His niece still lives there and discusses her famous uncle, who had a remarkable career.

Give it a watch.

More in a bit.
