Post 1734 - My Saturday

Of course, today I took my mother shopping. We had lunch at the Port Pub in Port Williams before we got her groceries.

I did splurge today on the latest (last?) Bob Lee Swagger novel, "Dead Zero". I hope that Stephen Hunter writes more of the series, but his next novel features a character introduced in Dead Zero.

Tried watching "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" this evening. Lots of interruptions. Will finish in the morning. It's just a series of skits strung together to form some sort of "narrative". Like you care.

Like the old-time radio show said over and over, "It is later than you think". Points if you can ID the show.

See you tomorrow.

The song "Enjoy Yourself, It's Later Than You Think" is the theme tune to both the radio and television versions of the BBC program, "I've Never Seen Star Wars." The most popular version of the song was recorded by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, but it has been recorded by many other performers.

Ken, I know that song well. However, that is not what I was referring to.

What OTR show used the phrase "It is later than you think" as a catchphrase?

Lights Out

Ding ding ding!

Now, for bonus points, who was the executive producer of "Lights Out" during that period? There were 2 main creative forces on "Lights Out". Who was the one who came up with the "It is later than you think" byline?

Arch Oboler. The other (earlier) "main creative force" was Wyllis Cooper.

Very good, Ken. Now, did you know that, or did wikipedia come to the rescue? :-)

I have probably a couple thousand OTR shows on cd. Let me know if you want some, sometime.

Oh, Lord, Wikipedia, of course. Although, with my interest in radio as a young dude, I'm sure I knew at one time - remember, my long term memory is about shot these days!

This is getting to the point where the comments add up to more text than the original blog post.

Like I said, I have a bunch of OTR shows. I remember very fondly when "As it Happens" on CBC used to run OTR shows during the last half hour, back in the 1970's. I had never heard such programs before.

Around that time, I discovered the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre. It ran on CBS AM stations back then, late at night. Little did I know that its executive producer was Hyman Brown, a veteran of the golden age of radio Late in life, he had the chance to do it again. I fondly recall that show, and have some of those on cd, too.

I listened to those shows on "As it Happens" on CBC as well, Bev. Too strange that we have some of the same memories and interests!

Oddly enough, I still remember snatches of episodes of shows like X Minus One and Boston Blackie.

God, I loved CBC radio back in the day. I still listen to it, but not nearly as much as I used to; and what I hear, I don't enjoy as much as I did back in the day.

I also listened to CBC Radio a great deal back in the day. But I can't tell you when I listened the last time! Different interests, likes and dislikes, I guess.

I still tune into Info Morning. I like Q when I tune in, but find Jian Ghomeshi is breathlessly enthusiastic about the merest celebrity. Mainstreet can be fun. Maritime Noon is passably more interesting with Norma Lee MacLeod.

Stan Carew's show on the weekend is extremely entertaining. The Last Chapter is fun. Randy's Vinyl Tap and Saturday Night Blues are excellent. There are other fine shows as well.

There are still shows on the CBC that I support and defend. There's a lot of filler, though. The specialness of the CBC is lost on me, but then again, I'm 47 and lots of things are not fun for me any more.
